The Technische Hochschule Lübeck was founded in 1961 as the Lübeck State Engineering School. It began teaching mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and physical engineering in 1962.
In 1969, the three Lübeck engineering schools were merged to form the “Lübeck State University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Maritime Studies” and in 1973 it was renamed the “Lübeck University of Applied Sciences”. The actual roots of the university thus lie further back than those of the University of Lübeck, which was only founded in 1964.
As of 1 September 2018, the “Fachhochschule Lübeck (FHL)” will have the new name: “Technische Hochschule Lübeck”.
