Hogeschool PXL was founded on 1 October 2013 after the merger between XIOS Hogeschool Limburg and Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg. Both colleges were founded in 1995 as a result of the 1994 college decree. Colleges merged throughout Flanders and the educational landscape was thoroughly redrawn. Many academic programmes moved from colleges to universities. The programmes Industrial Sciences (XIOS), Architecture (PHL), Interior Architecture (PHL) and Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy (PHL) were transferred to Hasselt University.
