DeVry was founded in 1931 as a DeForest training school in Chicago, Illinois. The school’s founder, Herman A. DeVry, invented the film projector and produced educational and training films. Dennis Keller and Ronald Taylor met in the early 1970s when they were DeVry teachers. Keller and Taylor studied the economics of for-profit education during DeVry. In 1973, the two established the Keller School of Management with a $ 150,000 loan from friends and family. The school started as a day school with a certificate. Keller School has since become a night shift offering MBAs, and by 1976 was targeted primarily at working adults. The school was fully accredited by North Central University and the Schools Association in 1977, the first for-profit school to receive accreditation through the body.

DeVry was first fully certified in 1981. Keller School of Management acquired DeVry from Bell & Howell in 1987. The value of the leveraged buyout was $ 147.4 million. The two schools merged into DeVry Inc., with Keller serving as chairman and chief executive officer, and Taylor president and chief operating officer.
